Introduction

On May 3, 2025, Art City hosted its annual fundraising extravaganza—the Bouffant Ball, presented by Edward Carriere—and I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the evening at the stunning Metropolitan Entertainment Centre in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This year’s theme: FANTASY HAIR! Think towering wigs, surreal styles, bright colours, and playful textures. It was a celebration of community, creativity, and courage in fashion.

I was hired to be the event photographer, but of course I had to bring the Ksama Collective to join the fun and capture the mood, connection, and magic of the night—both behind the lens and behind the scenes.

Behind the Scenes: Laughter, Coiffures & Connection

There’s something so joyful about community-driven events like this. Art City is known for its accessible art programming for children and people of all ages and abilities, and this night was all about celebrating that mission. Guests showed up in their boldest looks—feathered headpieces, tinsel wigs, neon braids, sculptural designs, and everything in between.

We kept our cameras focused on smiling faces, laughter, and connection. Between the hair-raising styles and electric energy, every corner of the venue buzzed with joy. Whether guests were getting their hair styled by Edward Carriere Stylists at the Bouffant Bar, posing for hair portraits by Ally Gonzalo, or popping into Karen Asher’s quirky photobooth, there was no shortage of moments to capture.

Even as the official photographer, I couldn’t resist vlogging the behind-the-scenes experience with Ksama. It’s rare to witness such unfiltered joy, and we wanted to document it all.

Ksama's Vibe: What It’s Like Covering Events Like This

People always ask: What’s it like being a photographer at events like this? The truth is—it’s chaotic, beautiful, and deeply fulfilling. You’re moving constantly, reading energy in the room, adjusting to lights and shadows, and trying to capture honest moments without interrupting the experience.

With Ksama, our mission is simple: capture connection and joy in real time. We laugh, we sweat, and we shoot with purpose. Events like these remind us why community photography is so vital—it preserves joy. It gives us all something to look back on and smile.
