introduction
The beauty industry is filled with artists who turn passion into purpose, and few embody this journey as gracefully as Muriel Garma. From sneaking into her mom’s makeup bag as a child to creating stunning looks that light up her clients’ faces today, her story is one of creativity, resilience, and unwavering love for her craft.
In this blog post, we explore Muriel's path into the world of makeup artistry—starting with childhood memories, unforgettable first clients, and the moment she truly found her place. Now a key part of Emmeline’s beauty team, she shares her favorite parts of the creative process, her unconventional approach to learning, and advice for those dreaming of a future in the beauty industry.
How did your interest in beauty and makeup start? How old WERE you?
I have a vivid memory from when I was a child, probably 5 years old, when I first became fascinated with “beauty”. I remember being teeny tiny, looking up at my mom as she put heated curlers in her hair and did her makeup. I was so drawn to what she was doing. From this moment on I would dig into my moms makeup bag, while she wasn’t around, and play with her lipsticks, brushes, and colour eyeshadows having so much fun. This was the first time I felt pretty, like a beautiful princess.
What was your first paid client experience like?
I was nervous before going to my clients house because I didn’t know what to expect but coming into her home and feeling so welcomed it felt unreal that I was there to do a “service”. My client was an older woman in her 50s and she was invited to a wedding, she wanted something warm and fresh, much like her energy. Throughout the process, she shared with me her life story - it felt like I was doing makeup on a close friend. She also had kids, a daughter whose eye widened at the sight of my makeup kit, and an admiration of me putting makeup on her mommy. I will never forget my first client experience because I left that appointment knowing I chose the right passion I was meant to do.
How long have you been doing makeup / beauty services?
I have been in the beauty industry since 2016 on and off. Initially I started posting beauty content on Instagram sharing makeup products, creating looks on myself, and short videos of me doing makeup on friends and family. My humble beginnings started with no business plan, just a desire to do makeup, and it shaped me to become resilient in my business and passionate about my work - I truly felt fulfilled. Over the next four years, I went back to college and then covid happened so there were some pit stops along the way. I’m just glad that I gave it another shot in 2021 to do makeup full time. Since then I have really found my place and found a purpose to pursue this career path with people who also love what they do.
What is your favourite part of doing makeup or being in the beauty industry?
My favourite part of doing makeup is the whole creative process itself. I am such a hands on type of person that once I start the glam session I am locked in. I LOVE taking someones vision and turn it into reality. When a client looks in the mirror and they light up in disbelief, it’s the best feeling knowing I was able to make them feel beautiful through makeup! My favourite part about being in the beauty industry is being part of a creative team who also loves what they do and are passionate. I’m also a huge empath so I thrive when others thrive and my soul lights up when I see others doing their thing. The creative energy feels magnetic to me!
What kind of education of experience do you have that supports what you do now?
I actually don’t have any professional education on makeup artistry! My experience included a lot of YouTube tutorials and developing my skills practicing on people.
How did you start working with Emmeline and the team?
Emmeline and I worked together for a brief moment back in 2016/2017 where I did my first boudoir shoot with her. After that we’ve been internet friends until we worked together again in 2021. This year we’ve actually established a new partnership with Jeremy and formed her in-house beauty team for Little Moons! We’ve been levelling up together every since!
Anything you want to add and say to aspiring makeup artists / beauty industry creatives?
Keep exploring your passions and what lights you up inside - there’s a reason for it! The more you lean into your passions the more fulfilled your life will feel. Also, always show gratitude - It reframes your mindset to focus on abundance rather than scarcity, which can help you feel more optimistic and fulfilled.
