Introduction

We spent the day with Ali Fontaine — award-winning singer/songwriter from Sagkeeng First Nation — to capture a portrait session that honors her heritage, artistry, and evolution as a musician. With four outfit changes, soft yet bold styling, and moments featuring her acoustic guitar, this session was about embracing her duality: strength and softness, tradition and modernity.

Behind the Scenes: Music, Movement & Meaning

This wasn’t just a regular portrait session — it was storytelling through images. Ali brought her signature calm presence and radiant energy, while Muriel Garma worked her makeup magic with soft glam and a striking pink eyeliner to highlight Ali’s eyes. Jer Aguason styled two stunning hair looks: a long, fake braid and a half-up, half-down style that added subtle drama and femininity.

We took a hybrid approach — part branding session, part editorial. The goal was to create empowering portraits that reflect Ali’s career journey and values. Ali’s acoustic guitar was a grounding prop — a nod to where it all began.

Outfits & Styling

Ali wore:

  • A classic black outfit paired with a blazer — polished, elegant, and powerful.
  • A brown pleated maxi skirt styled with clean basics for a timeless feel.
  • A ribbon skirt, paired with layers: a high-neck bodysuit, short sleeves, and thoughtful textures — blending culture and fashion.

Every outfit reflected a different part of her artistry and identity.

Client Story

Ali Fontaine won the NCI Jam in 2010 at just 16 years old and went on to release her debut album to critical acclaim, including nominations at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and the title of Most Outstanding Manitoban. Her music is honest, intimate, and deeply rooted in both her Sagkeeng First Nation upbringing and her evolving artistry.

This session wasn’t just about beautiful portraits — it was about presence, legacy, and quiet power. Working with Ali was an honor. Her grounded, heartfelt energy made this shoot feel more like a collaboration of stories than just a session. Can’t wait to see where her music and voice take her next.
